total of 77 recaptured inmates who had occupied an overcrowded prison in Jambi are being redistributed to other prisons in the city and in the South Sumatran capital of Palembang, after they escaped when a prison wall collapsed from a flood on June 14.
“The 59 female prisoners and 18 male prisoners are those who were recaptured after their escape during the flood,” said head of the Jambi Law and Human Rights office Bambang Palasara on Thursday.
The female inmates are to be moved to Muara Bulian women's prison in Batanghari regency, Jambi province, while the male prisoners have already been moved to a Palembang prison to serve the rest of their sentences.

Bambang said the second-class Jambi Prison had held 1,200 inmates while, according to Antara, its maximum capacity was 300 inmates. He said other inmates would gradually redistributed to other prisons in Jambi or to prisons in neighboring provinces.
The overcrowded prison condition was also blamed for the riots and mass escape of dozens of inmates in early January. (bbn)
