he government is distributing 7,500 new pieces of fishing equipment this year to replace cantrang -- kind of Danish seine net identified as unsustainable and not environmentally friendly -- whose deployment will be prohibited starting from December.
The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry’s boat and fishing equipment director, Agus Suherman, said on Wednesday that the ministry had received proposals to replace cantrang from regencies and cities.
“We received 15,248 proposals to replace cantrang. After a review, we reached the figure of 7,500,” said Agus in Jakarta on Wednesday as reported by trinunnews.com.

The owners of bigger boats will be allocated loans from state-owned lenders Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN).
“The government will seize cantrang after the owners get the new fishing equipment,” he added.
Cantrang was grouped under the category of instruments banned in Ministerial Regulation No. 2/2015.
The regulation bans the use of all types of trawls and seine nets, which the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry argues is destructive to coral reef and the seabed ecosystem. (bbn)
