he Golkar Party is preparing its next moves after its chairman Setya Novanto, the House of Representatives speaker, was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in the high-profile graft case surrounding the procurement of electronic identity (e-ID) cards.
“We have assigned the Golkar Party faction at the House to immediately study the decision to name Setya Novanto a suspect by the KPK,” Golkar secretary-general Idrus Marham said on Tuesday.
Setya is now in the spotlight after the KPK named him a suspect on Monday in the botched procurement case that has also implicated dozens of other politicians and reportedly caused Rp 2.3 trillion (US$172.7 million) in state losses.
Golkar is also preparing legal measures, said another party executive Nurdin Halid.
“Golkar has formed advocacy teams, both internal and external, to handle the case that has implicated the Golkar chairman,” Nurdin said, adding that Setya had also appointed lawyers to assist him in the case.
The KPK has accused Setya of having had key roles in planning a scheme to swindle funds earmarked for the e-ID project with Andi “Narogong” Agustinus, a businessman who was previously named a suspect by the anti-graft body.
The KPK has named three other suspects in the e-ID case, two senior officials at the Home Ministry Irman and Sugiharto, and member of the House of Representatives Miryam S. Haryani. (ipa)
