Passengers can now avail of the services of porters in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for free.

The airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II issued an official policy on Friday that porters must help carry luggage, as well as collect trolleys, without payment from passengers.

The service is available in all Soekarno-Hatta’s terminals. The porters have now been designated as “airport helpers”.

“Because they are airport helpers, they must help with anything under their authority, not just carrying luggage,” said Dewando Prasetyo Nugroho, branch communication manager of PT Angkasa Pura II, on Friday.

The airport has 805 airport helpers previously supplied by three service-provider companies. They will now become employees of PT Angkasa Pura Solusi, the airport operator’s subsidiary.

"They will now be paid in accordance with Jakarta’s standard minimum wage,” he added. Jakarta’s minimum wage is Rp 3.35 million (US$251.4) per month.

He further said that the policy was taken to provide a better service for passengers in a bid to improve the airport’s image as an international hub.
