he Jakarta administration is set to liaise with the police on the enforcement of a city regulation demanding that residents park vehicles only on their properties.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency has warned residents that parking cars on the roadside could see the vehicles towed away.
According to the 2014 regulation, a car owner should have a garage on their property to park the vehicle, which is a requirement for obtaining a vehicle registration document [STNK].
Jakarta Transportation Agency deputy head Sigit Wijatmoko said the administration would communicate with the Jakarta Police regarding the policy in relation to the STNK issuance.
"The police has the authority to issue STNK. However, they have not listed the garage ownership as a requirement to get STNK," Sigit said on Friday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Even though the policy had not been strictly enforced since the regulation’s issuance in 2014, the transportation agency now looks committed to monitoring its implementation.
Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah said the agency was not only authorized to tow vehicles parked on sidewalks but also inside residential complexes, because the streets were all owned by the city. (cal)
