M

ore than a hundred of people from several organizations staged a rally on Saturday in front of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) office in Central Jakarta to protest a discussion about the 1965 communist purge in Indonesia.

Organizations involved in the rally include the Anti-Communist Students and Youth Alliance, Indonesian Islamic Students Movement (PMII) and Laskar Merah Putih mass organization.

The coordinator of the rally, Rahmat Himran, said the rally aimed to prevent the discussion on the 1965 communist purge from taking place. He claimed the discussion was pro-communism.

“The discussion will revive communism,” Rahmat said, adding that he would hold another rally on Sunday to ensure that the discussion does not take place.

At around 8 a.m., police officers blocked the office because the event was held without permission, said National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto.

As a result, the LBH postponed the discussion, even though victims of the large-scale killings gathered in front of the office to attend the discussion.
