A

mob attack at the Foundation of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI) in Central Jakarta in the wee hours of Monday has left five police officers injured.

The mob protested outside the building demanding that a gathering related to the 1965 communist purge be broken up. Protesters threw rocks and glass bottles at the police, Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said.

"Until right now, the five personnel are still receiving treatment at the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati [in East Jakarta]. We are still checking with their doctors to see whether they can receive treatment at home. There are wounds on their heads and arms," Argo told reporters at the Jakarta Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday.

The mob also damaged a number of police vehicles, Argo said.

The situation prompted the police and event organizers to evacuate people inside YLBHI to a safer place.

“When the chaos broke out [around 1:22 a.m., we prioritized [eight people] who were sick,” Usman Hamid from Amnesty International Indonesia told reporters.

A woman was seen being carried by about six people because she had fainted.

The evacuation was carried out in three phases until 2:17 a.m.

He also said an event committee member was injured by the thrown rocks. (fac/ecn)
