tate-owned telecommunications company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) and state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga will establish a joint venture company that will be in charge of electronic toll road payments before the end the year.

The joint venture would function as a clearing house to collect payments and distribute the funds to the relevant banks, said Telkom enterprise and business service director Dian Rachmawan in Melbourne on Thursday

"We will establish the company with PT Jasa Marga this year," said Dian, adding that the other state-owned toll road operators -- PT Waskita Toll Road and PT Hutama Karya – would join the company later.

Electronic payments for the toll road began in 2009 when state-owned lender PT Bank Mandiri signed a 10-year exclusive contract with Jasa Marga.

In March, 2016, the bank opened the system to other state-owned banks -- PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), and PT Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN).

Dian said with the government's plan to liberalize the toll road payment system, it could no longer be contolled by one bank. Third-party payment gateway operators would take over the role and distribute the payment flows to participating banks. (bbn)
