A woman in Central Jakarta was electrocute and died while taking her grandchild to school on Wednesday morning.
The woman, identified as Suryah, 49, was walking behind her grandchild at 8:09 a.m. on Jl. Percetakan Negara II, Central Jakarta, when she was killed.
The grandchild, however, was safe.
"She was walking on the road’s edge where there are two electric poles. I think there was leakage [from the poles] because of the rain," said Comr. Maruhum Nababan, Central Jakarta's Johar Baru Police chief.
He said bystanders tried to help the woman by using wooden and bamboo sticks, but to no avail.
"Because of the rain, the bystanders could not do anything because electricity was still flowing from the pole," Maruhum added.
The victim was taken to Cipto Mangungkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta after a technician from state-owned electricity firm PLN shut the electricity off.
