uspended Jakarta State University (UNJ) rector Djaali paid a visit to House of Representatives Commission X overseeing education on Thursday to voice his objection to what he deemed an arbitrary suspension following alleged doctoral degree foul play at UNJ.
The case emerged when a government-sanctioned academic performance evaluation team (EKA) set up in 2015 by Research and Technology and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir discovered indications of doctoral degree scams at UNJ and three other institutions. The case prompted Nasir to suspend Djaali on Sept. 25 on allegations of plagiarism and mismanagement.
Djaali told Commission X on Thursday that he had yet to receive a formal notification of his suspension from the ministry.
He also questioned the work of an independent team formed by the ministry to follow up EKA’s findings after conflicting results were found by another team set up by UNJ. The UNJ team, Djaali said, did not find such alleged practices.
"[Our] team did not find indication of any such accusations," Djaali said on Thursday as quoted from kompas.com.
"The independent team should work in a transparent manner. I challenge the ministry since we are talking about an accusation against a rector," he added.
The ministry has assigned its director general for learning and student affairs, Intan Ahmad, UNJ's acting rector, who will soon form a team to overhaul UNJ's management of the doctoral program, which had been marred by allegations of degree scams. (ipa)
