T

he Jakarta Environment Agency plans to procure seven vehicle-emission test machines next year following its plan to set the test as a requirement to renew vehicle registration certificates (STNK).

The head of the agency, Isnawa Adji, said that currently the agency owned only two machines as the tests were rarely conducted.

The tests were usually only held during ceremonial events at City Hall or at mayoralty offices, Isnawa said on Sunday according to wartakota.tribunnews.com.

However, as the 2018 Asian Games approach, the city administration plans to apply the tests to every four-wheeled vehicle in the hope of improving air quality in the city.

The program will be organized by the agency in cooperation with the city’s Transportation Agency, Vehicle Document Registration Center (Samsat) and the Regional Fund Management.

The environment agency would also engage some garages in the city to carry out the emission tests, Isnawa said.

Meanwhile, the head of the environmental impact assessment unit of the agency, Andono Warih, said the air quality in the city was still at a moderate level.

“The air quality in Jakarta is at a moderate level, which is not too bad, and better than Beijing,” Andono said. (cal)
