resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo signed a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) as a legal basis to establish the Haj Fund Management Agency (BPKH), which is authorized to manage the close to Rp 100 trillion (US$7 billion) haj fund that was previously under the management of the Religious Affairs Ministry.
Perppu No 110/2017, signed by Jokowi on Dec. 11, declares the BPKH an independent institution that is required to report its activities to the President through the Religious Affairs Ministry.
According to the regulation, the BPKH consists of two bodies – a managing body and supervisory body.

The managing body has five members, who are appointed and dismissed by the President. “Members of the managing body are chosen by a selection team established by the President,” said Article 6, paragraph 4 of the regulation as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Meanwhile, the supervisory body has seven members, consisting of one representative from the Religious Affairs Ministry, one representative from the Finance Ministry and five professionals selected by a team established by the President.
Jokowi’s idea to invest the haj fund in infrastructure projects was met with a mixed response from the public. Jokowi appointed BPKH members in July. BPKH member Anggito Abimayu said the amount of funds ready to be invested had reached Rp 80 trillion. (srs/bbn)
