nflation was recorded at 0.62 percent in January, lower than the previous month's rate of 0.71 percent, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced on Thursday.
This puts year-on-year (yoy) inflation at 3.25 percent, the lowest yoy inflation rate recorded in January since 2004.
Core inflation was recorded at 0.31 percent, while administered prices posed a deflation rate of 0.15 percent and volatile prices inflation was recorded at 2.58 percent.
BPS head Suhariyanto said staple food prices, which had risen 2.43 percent, were the largest contributors to January’s inflation rate.
"As has been estimated, the rising rice prices had the biggest impact on the inflation rate, with a contribution of 0.24 percent," he said on Thursday.
The price of chicken, fish and chili also increased in January, while eggs and red onion saw price decreases.
Transportation prices also posed a deflation rate of 0.28 percent after the drop in air and rail travel prices following the holiday season.
Suhariyanto said he expected the price of rice to decrease in February with the start of the harvest season.
"We saw the price start to decrease in the final week of January as some farmers had begun harvesting." he said. "In February and March, more farmers will start to harvest so we expect the price to return to a normal level." (kmt/bbn)
