View all search resultstornado hit Panggang Island in the Thousand Islands regency at around 3 a.m. on Friday, leaving at least 16 houses damaged and resulting in dozens of trees being blown over.
Although there were no casualties, the number of damaged houses is likely to increase as the island’s subdistrict officers are still gathering the data on the damaged houses.
“The number of damaged houses and the material losses are being counted,” an Indonesian Red Cross staff member on the island, Ayub, told tribunnews.com on Friday.
Late last year, at least two tornados hit Kelapa Dua Island in the regency, causing damage to around 55 houses. The first incident, which damaged 21 houses, took place on Nov. 13, while the other one on Nov. 19 damaged 34.
In October, the regency also saw a rare occurrence when three waterspouts were seen next to each other.
Previously, National Disaster Mitigation Agency head Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the incident showed that climate change was happening in the city due to environmental destruction. (van)
