T

he first hearing of an alleged fraud case involving First Travel agency was held on Monday at the Depok District Court in West Java, with many of its reported victims in attendance.

First Travel president director Andika Surachman, director Anniesa Hasibuan and finance director Siti Nuraidah Hasibuan stand accused of scamming umrah (minor haj) hopefuls out of Rp 848 billion (US$69.3 million).

Upon their arrival in the courtroom at 10 a.m., they were met with shouts of “thief” and “cheater” from their alleged victims, many of whom had been waiting since 8 a.m., according to kompas.com.

They continued voicing their outrage even as court proceedings began, triggering a warning from a court official who said the hearing would not continue until the crowd quieted down.

About 58,600 people nationwide have reportedly fallen victim to the alleged fraud committed by First Travel. (vny)
