tate-owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno said on Wednesday that she would evaluate the performance of state-owned construction company PT Waskita Karya following the collapse of an elevated toll road section in East Jakarta on Tuesday.
“There will be an evaluation. We have seen the field,” Rini said as reported by kompas.com when asked about the punishment to be given to Waskita Karya, the project's contractor.
The accident wounded seven workers in the incident.
Following the collapse of a section of the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road project, which was the latest of a number of recent accidents involving infrastructure projects, the Public Works and Housing Ministry had temporarily halted work on all elevated projects, pending an evaluation on the implementation of such projects.
In response to the number of accidents involving infrastructure projects, Rini proposed to establish an additional department in each state-owned construction company that would be responsible for worker safety.
“There must be a director or senior vice president in state-owned enterprises who is responsible for safety,” he added.
The collapse at Becakayu was the latest in a string of accidents, including the collapse of an underpass retaining wall near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport that caused one death, the collapse of a crane on the double-track railway in Jatinegara killing four people and the collapse of six girders on the Antasari-Depok toll road along Jl. TB Simatupang in South Jakarta, which damaged an empty truck. (bbn)
