A British national was arrested for his alleged attempt to smuggle 655 diazepam pills into Bali on Jan. 24.
Adam Scott H., 48, a computer analyst, was arrested by Customs and Excise Office personnel at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Jan. 24 upon his arrival via Air Asia flight FD 398 from Bangkok, Thailand.
Ngurah Rai Customs and Excise Office head Himawan Indarjono told a press conference on Thursday that customs officers grew suspicious of the suspect after scanning his belongings during an X-ray security check at the customs desk of the airport's international terminal.
“Therefore, our customs officers later decided to take him to their office to further look through his belongings. We found a plastic bottle containing 655 diazepam pills without any customs declaration,” Himawan said.
The suspect presented a document that he claimed was a prescription of the pills, Himawan said.
However, according to the document, the bottle contained only 42 pills of diazepam, he added.
“We accused the suspect of violating the 1997 Psychotropic Law because he brought the diazepam pills without any prescription or permit,” Himawan explained.
According to the investigation report, the suspect used the diazepam to relieve pain from an illness he is suffering from. "However, he brought too many diazepam pills as he thought it would be hard to get the drugs in Bali," said Bali Police drugs investigator Comr. I Made Pakris. (ebf)
