Switzerland, a small but prosperous country in Central Europe, is ready to work with all ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, in the field of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), a senior Swiss official has said.
“It is in our long tradition that TVET is perceived as a means for poverty alleviation, integration and is meant for economic development. What is unique about Switzerland’s TVET system is that the private sector plays such a crucial role. I sincerely hope that this workshop will be the first step for a closer collaboration with ASEAN, and that we will be able to generate common ideas for joint actions in the field of TVET.” Tim Enderlin, Director of Cooperation for Laos and the Mekong Region (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam).
He was referring to the recently held workshop called the ASEAN-Switzerland Consultation Workshop on Technical Vocational Education and Training at the Gran Mahakam Hotel, Jakarta, recently. The workshop was jointly convened by the ASEAN Secretariat and the Swiss government.
The two-day workshop also identified areas of mutual interest and possible synergy on TVET. The workshop was in line with a sub-goal of the ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2016-2020.
“TVET is unique in its needs, and the success or otherwise of our TVET development work in ASEAN will be reflective of our community building goal. The TVET project in ASEAN is not one that is singular in purpose or in its reach – it is the responsibility of the entire ASEAN community and will define our success as one,” said Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, deputy secretary-general of ASEAN for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.
In July 2016, Switzerland became a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. Under this partnership, both ASEAN and Switzerland try to promote cooperation in areas of human resource development, employment and vocational education and training through consultations, including sharing and exchanging on best practices and experiences as well as providing particular technical support to CLMV countries.
