ne of the members of the Surabaya Black Hat (SBH) cybercriminal gang had previously been convicted in an online child pornography case, Jakarta Police cybercrime unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Roberto Pasaribu revealed on Wednesday.
“We’ve just discovered that apparently a member of the [SBH] gang is a convict in [a big case named] Loly Candy last year,” said Roberto, referring to a Facebook group whose members had frequently shared links to videos of child pornography.
The convict has been serving his prison sentence since April 2017. The police are currently investigating his role in the cyber gang.
“We found his name on the member list of SBH’s Telegram chat group,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono previously told the press that the gang of six members allegedly had hacked 600 websites to gather information and data.
“[The gang] used the information and threatened [to] spread the data if the victims didn’t give them some money,” he said as reported by tribunnews.com.
The SBH gang allegedly had been carrying out the scheme for a year and had amassed around Rp 200 million (US$14,500) in blackmail money. (vla)
