T

wo adopted children of an allegedly abusive mother, who lived with the children in various hotels for several years, were reportedly forced to sleep on the bathroom floor with newspapers for their bedding.

Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) commissioner Putu Elvina said on Wednesday that the two were children with special needs.

The 60-year-old woman even allegedly locked the two children in the hotel room while she and her three other children went to Singapore, Putu said.

“What if there was a fire? Her action's put the children’s safety at risk,” she said.

The Jakarta Police arrested the woman, who had reportedly spent billions of rupiah to stay in luxury hotels with her five adopted children in Central and West Jakarta for 10 years, after one of the children ran away and reported the abusive parenting to a former nanny.

She and the children stayed in the Twin Plaza Hotel in Slipi, West Jakarta, and also at the Menara Peninsula Hotel nearby. Since 2015 they had stayed in the Le Meridien Hotel in Central Jakarta, the police reported.

Putu said the KPAI had found that despite the allegations of abuse, several of the children had an emotional attachment to the woman.

Three of the children were reportedly well nurtured and could enjoy the facilities in the hotels. When traveling abroad, the mother would bring these children with her, Putu said.

The KPAI is now working with the Jakarta Police to investigate the case and, together the Social Ministry, is looking for the biological parents of the children. (cal)
