T

he first day of the inaugural digital national examination (UNBK) for senior high school students in Jayapura, Papua, ran smoothly despite network disturbances in the region.

The digital national exam for senior high school students will run from Monday to Thursday.

“The national exam went well. Twenty-three senior high schools participated in the digital exam, while three other schools used the paper exam,” Jayapura Education Agency head Fachrudin Pasolo said on Monday.

The internet connection in Papua has experienced disruptions since Apr. 7 as a result of technical problems with the underwater fiber-optic cables around Biak and Sarmi, apparent caused by an earthquake a day earlier.

Papua general manager Lonely Baringin of state-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom said that two out of the three schools still using paper exams were located beyond the company’s network. The one remaining school did not use Telkom’s services.

To maintain the stability of the internet network during the digital exam, Telkom Papua had provided a high-speed Internet connection to the schools with a bandwidth of up to 3 megabits per second. The service will be provided until the digital national exam for junior high school students ends on Apr. 26.

Repairs to the underwater cable will be made after the company has repaired its connection between Kaimana and Timika regencies, which is expected to finish on Apr. 14. To anticipate further network disturbances during the repairs, Telkom has temporarily activated its satellite Internet service.

The connectivity in the province is expected to return to normal between May 5 and May 6. (kuk/ebf)
