S tech giant Apple Inc. has set its sights on Indonesia as the location of its third largest IT center in the world, following the establishment of similar centers in Brazil and Italy, the Industry Minister has said.

Industry Minister Airlangga Hartato said the planned IT center was to be located in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), an integrated development in South Tangerang, Banten, and developed by the Sinar Mas Group.

"I hope that, with our cooperation with Apple, Indonesia will become one of the world's business hubs," said Airlangga.

The minister added that Apple's plan was in line with the government's latest Industry 4.0 efforts that aimed to improve the people’s welfare.

Under its Indonesia 4.0 roadmap, the government has planned the gradual digitalization of the manufacturing industry.

To achieve its objective, Airlangga said, the government needed to encourage activities that would boost innovations in applying the latest technologies. "Both need education and funding to make it happen," he said, as quoted in a tempo.co report.

The Indonesia 4.0 program focuses initially on five sectors: food & beverages, textiles & clothing, automotive, chemicals and electronics.

Airlangga said the government had decided on the five sectors in considering their impact on the economy and more attractive investment potential. (srs/bbn)
