T

he alleged mastermind behind a series of ATM robberies at convenience stores in Jakarta, identified only as JA, was shot dead by the police in the early hours of Monday, after he reportedly resisted arrest.

“We had to gun down one of the suspects, who was the mastermind of the crimes, because he attempted to fight us during our raid this morning,” West Jakarta Police criminal unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Edy Suranta Sitepu said on Monday at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta as reported by kompas.com.

JA, who had been sought by the police for the past week, pointed a gun at officers, Edy said, adding that the group JA led consisted of five individuals, who have now been arrested.

Edy said the group had carried out 53 robberies in 28 convenience stores across the city. “They collected at least Rp 700 million [US$50,190] from their crimes and we are still investigating whether the group has any connections with another syndicate,” Edy said.

The police confiscated 90 ATM cards, a gun, ammunition and a package of crystal methamphetamine, Edy said. (fac)
