Residents near the Krukut River in South Jakarta were left shocked after a grenade was found floating on the river on Thursday.
South Jakarta Police chief Comr. Indra Jafar said on Thursday the residents thought the grenade was still live.
“This morning at 8:30 a.m. a citizen reported that he had seen a grenade-like object floating on the river,” Indra said on Thursday as reported by kompas.com.
Indra said a water treatment facility employee, Surata, spotted the grenade on the Krukut River and swam to it to retrieve it, later wrapping the grenade with a piece of cloth.
He said Surata then gave the grenade to a security guard named Husni to later report it to the police.
“We have checked it and found that the grenade is inert. It had been used before, so it was just the shell of the grenade. It's very old as well,” he said.
Indra said the grenade was a smoke grenade usually used by the police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) and military personnel for riot control.
“We are still investigating the ownership of the grenade, where it came from what it was used for,” Indra said.
Indra urged citizens not to handle objects they suspect of being explosives.
“The next time citizens find a suspicious object like a grenade, don’t take it. Just call the police, in case it is a dangerous object,” Indra said. (ami)
