fter their much-applauded water sports duel on Lake Sunter in North Jakarta, which has inspired initiatives to clean up the area, Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti raced again, this time in waters near Tidung Island.

Sandiaga swam across the waters near Tidung Island, which is part of the capital’s Thousand Islands regency, while Susi rode on her paddle board again.

Just like the politicians’ first aquatic face-off, the rematch drew many spectators.

“I enjoyed [the swim]. The seabed and corals are very beautiful, but unfortunately there is now a lot of plastic,” Sandiaga said on Saturday after the race, as quoted by kompas.com.

Susi concurred, saying the beach’s white sand was still “wonderful”, but tainted by piles of plastic trash.

Both officials asked residents to participate in cleaning the island and the waters. (wit)
