Organizers are  preparing for the IMF-World Bank Meeting 2018 in Bali, including by holding simulations.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, who chairs the local organizing committee, said recently that preparations for the October event, including accommodation for the participants, had reached 70 percent completion.

Luhut said the venue for the meeting was about 76 kilometers away from Mount Agung.

“We have carried out a computer simulation in case the volcano erupts again like in 1963. […] We are also considered the direction of the winds,” Luhut said as reported by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.

He said the vicinity of the venue, however, would not be significantly affected should an eruption similar to that in 1963 occur.

Mt. Agung erupted in August last year, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes and causing airport closures.

Authorities lowered the alert status of the volcano from the highest level following a decrease in volcanic activity on Feb. 10.

Luhut said organizers had also simulated possible security disturbances during the event.

“As I said during a press conference in Washington, there is no country that is immune to security issues. But we have to be able to handle such a problem,” he added. (bbn)
