recent meeting of ministers from Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), highlighted the optimization of technology and importance of inclusivity in economic growth.

The meeting resulted in various agreements, including expanding access for all layers of society in the Asia-Pacific region to participate in economic and trade activities; optimizing the use of digital technology; the internalization of micro and small and medium enterprises (SMEs); increasing connectivity in the region; as well as creating inclusive and sustainable growth.

The Trade Ministry’s international trade negotiations director general, Iman Pambagyo, who attended the meeting to represent Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, said Indonesia welcomed APEC’s initiative and stressed the importance of inclusivity in economic growth.

“The development of internet and digital technology has changed the pattern of global activities, including trade. We want all of Indonesia to enjoy as much economic benefits as possible because this change can promote equal welfare distribution,” Iman said in a statement recently.

He acknowledged that the digital economy posed both challenges and opportunities for all APEC countries.

“Indonesia is aware of the digital-based economy phenomenon. Going forward, we want to prepare various policies which are not only profitable but also provide certainty and safety,” Iman said.

The meeting also discussed regional economic integration through the establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP). Member countries are still discussing several issues such as tariffs, services, investment, digital trade and micro and SMEs, among other topics. (dwa)
