Economy in brief: Firms commit to purchasing RI tuna

T

he maritime affairs and fisheries minister has signed a joint commitment with the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF) at the third Bali Tuna Conference to develop the country’s strategies in the fisheries industry.

In the joint commitment, firms that are members of the IPNLF, a foundation that works to bridge the gap between demand and supply of tuna, vowed to purchase Indonesia’s tuna products at a premium price.

The firms include United States-based Anova Food, Spain-based Frinsa del Noroeste, South Korea-based Green World Company and Switzerland-based Migros Group, among many other groups.

On the same occasion, the government also launched the Framework of Harvest Strategy for Tuna in Archipelagic Waters to manage the harvest of tuna. Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the framework intended to create sustainable tuna fisheries for the welfare of the fisheries community.

“Indonesia at the Bali Tuna Conference discussed certification [of tuna products] so that our products can become more competitive. Using this certification, Indonesian tuna can be sold at a premium price so it can compete globally,” Susi said in a statement on Sunday.

Aside from the certification, the minister also asked businesses and other stakeholders in the fisheries industry to trace the fisheries products they produce.

“Businesses must be able to maintain traceability. [They] must also not forget about certification. Because without certification, transactions can be difficult, or even impossible,” Susi said.

The theme of the third Bali Tuna Conference was “Indonesia’s tuna sector and international supply chains are benefiting from heightened levels of government-industry synergies”.
