ndonesia hopes the annual International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meeting to be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, in October, not only produces strategic output for the global economy but also creates benefits for the country’s own economy.

“Many expect the IMF-World Bank [annual meeting] to create output that is strategic for the global economy, while we also hope it will give benefits to the Indonesian economy,” said Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Luhut is chair of the local organizing committee for the meeting, expected to be attended by about 17,000 participants from across the globe.

Indonesia plans to offer investment in infrastructure projects to potential investors who attend the meeting in Bali from Oct. 8 to 14.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said urbanization, poverty and inequality, human capital investment and sustainable infrastructure financing would be among topics discussed in the meeting.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said from the IMF side, the meeting would focus on synchronizing the normalization policy from developed countries, which is expected to continue until 2019.

He said participants of the IMF meeting would also discuss global financial safety nets to protect emerging economies.

In addition, the IMF meeting would also address reform, particularly in regard to membership quota, Perry said. The ongoing reform was aimed at creating a balance between the size of emerging economies and their quota membership at international lenders. (bbn)
