he National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested earlier this month four people who were allegedly paid Rp 300 million (US$ 21,291) to transport 10 kilograms of sabu (crystal methamphetamine).
BNN chief Comr. Heru Winarno said the four couriers, who were detained on June 1 in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, were believed to be part of a Malaysia-Aceh network of sabu dealers.
“[They] were paid Rp 30 million per kilogram and each courier received at least Rp 50 million. So, in total, they got Rp 300 million,” Heru said on Friday as reported by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
The four suspects, identified as AL, AB, MU and KS, only acted as couriers, while the mastermind behind the smuggling attempt remains a fugitive, he added.
The men had allegedly hidden the drugs inside a box of tea bags.
“The four were arrested by the BNN’s team at the water gate of Muara Baru Dock in Penjaringan. The BNN confiscated a box containing 18 packages of Chinese tea, weighing a total of 9,976 grams,” he said.
AL is believed to have been responsible for transporting the meth from Palembang, South Sumatera, to Jakarta. Meanwhile, AB, MU, and KS were tasked with taking the meth from AL and bring it to Surabaya, East Java.
The suspects are charged with articles 112 and 114 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics, the maximum sentence for which is death.
The suspects are being detained at the BNN headquarters in Cawang, East Jakarta, for further investigation. (ami)
