“The police have arrested the suspects, who are part of a criminal group that specializes in violent robberies inside angkot,” the police’s criminal investigation unit chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Febriansyah, said on Wednesday as reported by kompas.com.
He said the police arrested the three suspects, identified only as H, 26, DM, 25, and AS, 27, on Tuesday in separate locations in North Jakarta.
Febriansyah said that H was the temporary angkot driver for the Tanjung Priok-Pulogadung route and that he had no driver's license.
DM allegedly threatened a passenger, Asih Sukarsih, 32, who jumped out of the angkot and died. AS allegedly attempted to steal the victim's bag before she jumped.
The police said a fourth suspect, who was on the police's most-wanted list, made the decision of which person to rob in the angkot.
Febriansyah added that DM and AS resisted the arrest and drew their weapons, so the police shot each of the suspects’ right legs.
The suspects face charges under Article 365 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) and a maximum sentence of five years in prison. (ami)
