outh Korea clinched the gold medal in the women's artistic gymnastics at the 2018 Asian Games on Thursday after its top gymnast, Yeo Seo-jeong, finished first in the vault final with 14.3 points.

Second and third place went Uzbekistan and North Korea, respectively.

Meanwhile, Indonesia, which was represented by 18-year-old Rifda Irfanaluthfi, finished fourth with a gap of only 0.6 points to the bronze medalist.

Indonesian women's team coach Eva Novalina Butarbutar told the press that finishing in 4th place was an achievement for her team, as they were competing against the best of Asian gymnasts.

“Even though one of [the medal winners] landed badly, their scores were hard to beat, as their jumps had higher difficulty scores than ours,” she said.

Eva said the team, especially Rifda, would use the experience as a stepping stone toward better techniques over the next years.

Indonesia on Thursday competed against seven gymnasts from North Korea, India, South Korea, Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei in the vaut final. Both India and Uzbekistan sent two athletes.

Clad in a blue-gold-red leotard, Rifda’s scored an average of 13.2 points for her jumps.

Uzbekistan’s Olympic gold medalist Oksana Chusovitina proved her caliber by booking an average of 14.2 points. However, 16-year-old Yeo outperformed her to emerge as the eventual winner of the discipline. (yan)
