ustralian telecommunication giant Telstra is rolling out its innovations, ideas and insights for the state-of-the-art 5G mobile network during the fifth edition of its annual 2018 Telstra Vantage showcase in Melbourne, Australia.

Before an audience of more than 6,000 business partners, Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn announced a new report by Deloitte on 5G technology, titled "5G mobile technology: Are businesses ready to seize the opportunity?”, which estimates the benefits the technology may contribute to the country’s economy could be worth up to AUD$2,000 per person, or between $32 billion and $50 billion by 2030.

“The report finds 5G technology will contribute to economic growth through increased productivity, workforce participation and new business opportunities,” Penn told the media at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, underlining the importance of raising the awareness of the community, business players and policymakers about the transformational opportunity presented by the 5G.

Citing the report that surveyed more than 550 business leaders across the country, Penn added that the Australian economy was already 2 percent larger thanks to the productivity benefits contributed by the use of mobile technology.

He revealed that more than 78 percent of respondents surveyed said that faster, more reliable and more responsive mobile telecommunications would benefit their businesses.

The implementation of 5G will improve the speed, reliability and capacity of the previous Gs technology to ramp up the uptake and capabilities of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, drones and augmented reality.

“The most cited barrier for businesses potentially adopting emerging technologies is that it might be too expensive,” Penn said, adding that at least 40 percent of the businesses expressed that among their top three concerns. “Interestingly though, close to half of businesses said they would be willing to pay at least 10 percent more than they currently pay in order to have faster, more reliable mobile telecommunications.”

The Telstra Vantage exhibition in which more than 130 exhibitors are participating will run until Thursday. (dmr)
