ndonesia has set a target to finish seventh overall at the 2018 Asian Para Games, an official said on Saturday in Medan, North Sumatra, during a torch relay event.

Youth and Sports Ministry secretary Gatot S. Dewa Broto said it was an ambitious target. “It’s an optimistic target if we look back to the last Asian Para Games [in Incheon, Korea], when we were ninth,” Gatot said.

He said Indonesia targeted 16 gold medals at the third-ever Para Games.

North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi welcomed the torch that was brought by Asian Para Games Organizing Committee (INAPGOC) chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari.

The torch relay event also featured Tor Tor, a traditional Batak dance.

North Sumatra sent 17 athletes in seven sports and targeted at least three gold medals, Edy said.

On Sunday morning, the first torch bearer, Gatot, handed the torch to para athlete Nurmala, a former athletics gold medalist at National Paralympic Week (Peparnas), at the Medan administration office on Sunday. The next destination for the torch is Pangkalpinang in Bangka Belitung. (evi)
