ndonesia added a second gold medal to its collection after Suparniyati emerged triumphant in the women’s shot put F20 (intellectual impairment) on Monday at the Asian Para Games competition at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta.

The Riau-born athlete managed a 10.75-meter throw, beating her opponent Hiromi Nakada of Japan who took the silver medal with a 10.51m shot. The bronze medal went to another Indonesian athlete Tiwa.

Despite her success, Suparniyati said she did not feel satisfied with the result as she could have done better.

Her personal best stands at 11.03 meters, which she threw at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur winning her the gold medal.

“Getting the medal is not the hardest part, sharpening your own record is the hardest part,” she said.

She added that she had been very nervous in the last two days because competing in front of the home crowd put more pressure on her compared to competing overseas.

“My mom called me this morning, saying I should calm myself down. I watched Korean variety show 'Running Man' to get the stress out of me,” she added, referring to the South Korean variety show that has become very popular across Asia. (yan)
