ndonesian sprinter Sapto Yogo Purnomo presented the eighth gold medal for his country during the 2018 Asian Para Games after winning the men’s 100 meter T37 (coordination impairment) by finishing the race in 11.49 seconds at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Sapto bested opponents Davoudali Ghasemi of Iran and Ali Alnakhli of Saudi Arabia, who finished second and third respectively with times of 11.97 and 12.01 seconds.
It was the second gold medal at the Para Games for 19-year-old Sapto, who won the men’s 200 m T37 on Monday.
The 100 m category is Sapto’s specialty – he won the gold medal in the category at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Sapto's time this year is also a personal best, as he clocked in at a slower 11.76 seconds at last year's ASEAN Para Games.
“My target was to improve my time and I was able to fulfill that,” he said.
Sapto still has the opportunity to add his medal collection as he will compete in the men’s 400 m. However, his expectations for the event are not as high.
“The 400 meter is not my specialty, but I still hope I can qualify for the final,” he said. (yan)
