embers of the Navy’s elite Frogmen Command (Kopaska) found on Friday what they believed to be the engine of Lion Air flight JT610, which crashed into the Java Sea on Monday.

“During an underwater search mission yesterday [Thursday], the Frogmen team  succeeded in finding what we suspect to be the engine of the downed Lion Air flight,” Kopaska commander Col. Johan Wahyudi said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

The team recorded the coordinates of where the engine was found.

Apart from the engine, AFP reported earlier that a joint search and rescue team had been hauling seats, wheels and other parts of the crashed aircraft. Search teams have been scouring the sea for the fuselage of the Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) head M. Ilyas said on Thursday that the fuselage was likely to no longer be intact and might have turned into debris.

The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is retrieving data from one of the two flight recorders retrieved on Thursday to obtain more information about the crash.

The Lion Air plane crashed on Monday morning while flying to Depati Amir Airport in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands, from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. The flight was carrying 189 people, comprising 181 passengers, two pilots and six crew members. (kuk)
