T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named Pakpak Bharat Regent Remigo Yolando Berutu a graft suspect following his arrest in Medan, North Sumatra, on Saturday night.

Remigo stands accused of accepting Rp 550 million (US$37,638) in bribes from a contractor involved in a project with the Pakpak Bharat Public Works Agency.

“The KPK has detained six people on Saturday night and early Sunday morning,” KPK head Agus Rahardjo said in a press conference at the KPK headquarters on Sunday night.

Only three of the six arrested have been named suspects: Remigo, Pakpak Bharat Public Works Agency head David Anderson Kasokeli and businessman Hendriko Sembiring. The antigraft body also found Rp 150 million in cash in a bag at Remigo’s house in Medan.

Remigo, a member of the Democratic Party, was arrested not long after he attended an event for volunteers for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s reelection campaign. Despite his party’s official support for the Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno ticket, Remigo is the head of a pro-Jokowi volunteer group.

Remigo is the eighth regional head from North Sumatra to have been arrested in a KPK raid in the past few years. (ipa)
