even crew members are still missing after the KM Multi Prima 1 sank in Sumbawa waters, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Saturday.

As of Monday, a search and rescue team from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was still searching for the missing crew members.

“The ship had 14 crew members. Seven survived while seven others went missing,” the head of the agency’s Mataram branch, I Nyoman Sidakarya, said in Mataram, the provincial capital, on Monday.

The cargo ship was transporting building materials and livestock food from Surabaya, East Java, to Waingapu in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), when strong waves caused by bad weather hit it in Sumbawa waters, causing it to sink.

Sidakaya said the seven survivors were saved by the KM Sinar Abadi 201 en route to Probolinggo, East Java. The sunken ship has not been located yet.

“Apart from Basarnas, the search is also being conducted through the air patrol by the Indonesian Air Force,” the agency’s spokesperson, I Gusti Wiswananda, said, adding that the team continued its search efforts around Kapoposang Island waters and in waters north of Sumbawa Island. (swd)
