Director Arif Maulana said if the police let the mob get away without facing legal consequence, it would be an insult to the law.
akarta Legal Aid institute (LBH Jakarta) director Arif Maulana has called the attack on Ciracas Police station in East Jakarta last week, which reportedly involved personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI), an insult to a state symbol and demanded a thorough investigation.
“We from the civil society groups call on the police to thoroughly investigate the case,” he told reporters on Monday.
The attack was allegedly triggered by the mob's disappointment over the police handling of an assault on Navy captain Agus Komaruddin and Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) member Rivonanda Maulana, allegedly at the hands of parking attendants of the Arundina shop in Cibubur, Ciracas.
The mob reportedly ransacked and burned down parts of Ciracas Police station on the night of Dec. 13, damaging police vehicles and leaving several officers and reporters injured.
Dozens of unidentified men have also ransacked the home of the parents of a parking attendant allegedly involved in the assault.
Arif said that if the police let the mob get away without facing legal consequence, “it will be an insult to the law,” he said.
The police have arrested five suspects allegedly linked to the assault on Agus and Rivonanda, identified as Agus Pryantara, 32, Herianto Panjaitan, 28, Iwan Hutapea, 31, and his wife, Suci Ramdani, 23, as well as Depi, 35.
In a case reenactment at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday, it was demonstrated that the assault began when Agus asked a parking attendant why his motorbike had been moved, after which they began to quarrel. When seeing Agus was attacked, Rivonanda tried to interfere but could not really help because of the large number of parking attendants. (fac)
