Employees of state-owned electricity firm PLN and Christian education foundation BPK Penabur were among the victims of the tsunami that hit beaches on Lampung and Banten on Saturday night.

PLN corporate communications head I Made Suprateka said in a statement on Sunday that 199 people – employees and their family members – had gone to Tanjung Lesung in Pandeglang, Banten, to participate in an employee gathering at the beach.

Tanjung Lesung in Pandeglang is one of the emerging tourist destinations currently promoted by the Tourism Ministry as the 10 New Balis.

Made said the purpose of the gathering was to evaluate the employees' performance during the year, but also to "break the ice" if there was any friction at work.

He said that 27 of the participants had died, while another 13 were still missing as of 3 p.m. on Sunday. The remaining 157 were confirmed to have survived.

"We have sent 36 ambulances [to Tanjung Lesung] to look for victims and carry the bodies of victims to the Pandeglang public hospital," he said.

Thirty-six BPK Penabur Jakarta employees were also having a joint vacation around Anyer beach, Banten.

BPK Penabur Jakarta spokeswoman Rhere Rewindinar said four of the employees had been found dead.

"Some of the other 32 employees are injured and are now receiving treatment. Let us pray that God restores them both mentally and physically," she said in a statement on Sunday.

"BPK Penabur Jakarta expresses the highest appreciation for the victims who passed away, for their service, dedication and everything they have contributed in their work for BPK Penabur Jakarta," she said. "Let God give the surviving family members and also the BPK Penabur Jakarta extended family strength. Amen."
