trong jolts were felt on Sangihe and Talaud islands, North Sulawesi, following a 7.1- magnitude earthquake in Philippine waters, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

The earthquake was strongly felt on Sangihe Island for six seconds and moderately on Talaud Island for four to five seconds.

“People came out of their houses immediately to find safe places. In Manado, the shocks were weak and only for two seconds,” BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement on Saturday.

“There have been no reports of casualties or building damage due to the earthquake. We are is still carrying out data collection,” he added.

Previously, the United States National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an early tsunami warning. However, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) did not issue the warning because it estimated that the earthquake had no tsunami potential.

The US warning stated that tsunami waves were possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.

Mindanao is 201 km from Talaud and 288 km from Sangihe, North Sulawesi.

“People have been urged to remain calm and not be misled. In Indonesia, the official referral institution related to early tsunami warnings is the BMKG. Therefore, use all information from the BMKG,” he said.

Rachmat Triyono, head of the tsunami and earthquake division at the BMKG, said the earthquake would not trigger a tsunami.

“Sangihe and Talaud islands residents have been called on to remain calm,” he said in a statement, Saturday. (ggq)
