T

he Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) has said it recorded 30.5 million active participants as of the end of December, 2018, exceeding the target of 29.6 million.

The agency recorded that employment stood at 50.7 million in the country.

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan director for participant affairs E. Ilyas Lubis said on Monday that the agency would continue to disseminate the agency’s programs to recruit as many workers as possible to become participants of the agency.

Throughout 2018, the agency recruited 3.4 million new participants, he said, adding that it was not only the result of the work of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, but also because of solid cooperation among stakeholders -- including the government, companies and workers.

“Workers also increasingly recognized the importance of taking part in an employee social security program," he said in a written statement.

He further explained the increase in the number of participants was pushed by strategic collaborations with regional and central governments, which provided awards to regional administrations and leaders who actively took part in recruiting BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants.

Ilyas said there was a significant boost in the number of formally employed workers joining the agency.

Meanwhile, there was a significant boost in membership from informal sector workers because of the establishment of the National Social Security Movement (Perisai), which actively recruits workers from the informal sector.

"Perisai has helped increase the number of participants who work informally. This is a positive trend toward comprehensive protection for all workers,” he added. (aak/bbn)
