oung Indonesian tennis player Priska Madelyn Nugroho stunned sixth-seed Lea Ma of the United States to advance to the third round of the junior grand slam in the Australian Open on Tuesday.

It was Priska’s debut in the grand slam.

In Tuesday’s second round, Priska ousted Ma in a rubber match 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 18 minutes on Court 8 at the Melbourne Park.

“I lost my focus when I already led 3-1 in the first set. My opponent did well in taking advantage of the situation. That cost me the set.

“I got back up again in the second set and maintained my domination in the third set to win the match. Serves became the key to the victory,” Priska said in a statement.

In the match, Priska produced at least seven aces that, on average, sped at 144 kilometers per hour, which was slower than Ma’s 147 kph.

In Wednesday’s third round, Priska is to face ninth-seed Kamilla Bartone of Latvia, who defeated Olivia Gadecki of Australia in the second round.

Priska’s coach Ryan Tanujoyo said if the 15-year-old maintained her top game as displayed in the second round, she would have a big chance of going to the next round. (nkn)
