he former world No. 2 in mixed doubles, Debby Susanto of Indonesia, has retired from badminton after her journey at the Indonesia Masters was cut short in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

Debby, who gained international success with previous partner Praveen Jordan, paired with young talent Ronald Alexander for her final tournament. They lost 21-15, 21-13 to Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich of Germany in the first round.

“I’ve been playing badminton for 17 years. From the moment I wake up, to having breakfast and getting ready for daily training – I’m going to miss so many things,” the 29-year-old said in a statement.

After retiring, Debby, who married long-time boyfriend Haptiwan Daya in 2017, said she wanted to focus on her family before deciding on her next step in life.

“I really need to focus on my family. Now, it is the end for badminton. I’m married, but I’ve been away from home a lot [because of badminton]. I want to do what real married people do. I also want to take care of my parents – I’ve been away from them for too long.

“I need my quality time,” said the 2016 All England champion. (nkn)
