A

man, identified as MH, 37, reportedly committed suicide by setting himself on fire, leading to a fire in Koja, North Jakarta, on Tuesday night.

Koja Police criminal unit head, Adj. Comr. Andry Suharto, said that MH committed the tragic act in the bathroom of the house he was living in, which was previously used as a petrol kiosk.

“The victim set himself on fire inside the bathroom. The smell of gasoline filled the bathroom,” Andry said as quoted by kompas.com.

MH, who worked as an app-based ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver, is believed to have suffered from depression. According to witnesses’ testimony, MH had been acting unusually since Monday.

“Since yesterday [Monday], the victim appeared unusual, like he had a problem but was unwilling to tell anyone,” Andry said.

The fire that began in the bathroom alarmed surrounding residents, who tried to put out the fire and called the fire authorities.

MH’s body was found inside the bathroom.

His body was brought to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta for an autopsy. (sau)
