"It's unusual. The flood washed away sofas and doors," Jakarta Water Agency social media spokesman Apit Raharjo said.
loodwater that flowed into Kali Besar in the Kota Tua area in Taman Sari, West Jakarta, on Tuesday carried bulky waste such as furniture and house fittings.
"It's unusual. The flood washed away sofas and doors," Jakarta Water Agency social media spokesman Apit Raharjo said as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that usually the volume of waste that is carried by floodwater into the Kali Besar would fill only two or three sacks.
"Today [the volume] amounts to 6 cubic meters," he said, noting that his staff needed around 200 sacks to remove the detritus.
The waste was dumped in a disposal site in Pluit, North Jakarta.
Responding to the flooding that occurred following heavy downpours early on Tuesday morning, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan chose not to say too much.
He instead asked reporters to check the impacted area themselves along with the flood duration.
"I wish my fellow journalists who write about the flood could check how many neighborhood units were impacted by the flooding, how long the water stayed," he said.
"The sensationalism is not relative to the real situation," he added.
Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) head Subejo said his subordinates were still collecting data on the number of areas impacted and the flood duration.
"We're still verifying the data. I'm sorry," he said. (vla)
