wo students and a teacher of SMP At-Taufiq junior high school in Semper Timur, North Jakarta, were electrocuted by an electric current surging through the gate of a house in front of the school on Tuesday morning. One of the students died.

The head of neighborhood unit (RT) 007, community unit (RW) 07, Wahyu Iskandar, said the accident occurred when the victim, Rafli, touched the gate.

“It was raining and flooding. Some witnesses said they saw the kids joking around when one of them touched the gate. They didn’t know it contained an electric current,” Wahyu said as quoted by kompas.com.

After Rafli was electrocuted, his friend, Heru, tried to help but was electrocuted too. Soon after that, a teacher, Cheffi, came to help and the same thing happened, Wahyu said.

“Realizing that they were all electrocuted, residents who witnessed the incident then tried to help in a different way,” he said, noting that some immediately turned off the power.

Rafli, who had lost consciousness, was rushed to Cilincing Hospital but died shortly after he arrived. Cheffi and Heru are receiving medical treatment at the same hospital.  (vla)
