Talk of the week: Goethe Institute Jakarta gets new director

The Goethe Institute recently appointed Stefan Dreyer as the new director of its cultural center in Indonesia -- the Goethe Institute Jakarta.
Dreyer, who takes up his position on Friday, is replacing Heinrich Blömeke.
“I am very excited to meet our partners here in Indonesia and to continue running projects and designing new project lines,” Dreyer said in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Before leading the Goethe Institute Jakarta, Dreyer worked at the Goethe Institute for 31 years in various major cities, such as Boston, Budapest, Colombo, New Delhi, Seoul and Munich. He started out as an intern in Jakarta 35 years ago.
Under the five-year leadership of Blömeke, the institute held a number of notable events. In 2015, it supported Indonesia as the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair and initiated IndonesiaLab, a presentation of contemporary art at cultural institutions in Frankfurt. The institute also encouraged collaboration between German and Indonesian artists by holding the German Season exhibit in Indonesia in 2015.
Moreover, the Goethe Institute Jakarta held the summer academy for young Muslim intellectuals from Indonesia on Muslim Life in Germany in 2017 and 2018. Recently, it organized a public forum, Postcolonial Perspectives from the Global South, in January.
The Goethe Institute has centers in Jakarta and Bandung, while in Surabaya its cultural center is called Wisma Jerman. The Goethe Institute Jakarta coordinates all activities for the Goethe Institute in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The institute aims to promote the study of German abroad and international cultural exchanges. It also provides a comprehensive picture of Germany with its political, social and cultural norms. Its various cultural and educational programs seek to support intercultural dialogue and global mobility.
