Action plan to develop new city in North Kalimantan signed

everal government institutions signed on Wednesday an agreement to develop Tanjung Selor in North Kalimantan as a new independent city (KBM), as stipulated in the 2015-2019 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
The ten cities included in the RPJMN plan are Padang in West Sumatra, Palembang in South Sumatra, Pontianak in West Kalimantan, Banjarbaru in South Kalimantan, Maja in Banten, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Manado in North Sulawesi, Sorong in West Papua, Jayapura in Papua and Tanjung Selor.
The agreement on the action plan for Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No 9/2018 on the development of Tanjung Selor signed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in October 2018 includes several government institutions as well as the North Kalimantan provincial and Bulungan regental administrations.
“The development of the new city is aimed at controlling continued urbanization of metropolitan cities in Java and Bali,” said Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution, adding that the signing ceremony was a sign of the central government’s commitment to accelerating the development of Tanjung Selor.
Geographically, Tanjung Selor is located in a strategic position as it is near the border of Indonesia and Malaysia. It is also the site of the Tanah Kuning integrated industrial and port area.
“Coordination among the relevant institutions is important to ensure efficiency and effectiveness so that there is no repetition of work by different ministries or government institutions,” Darmin said as quoted by kontan.co.id.
Meanwhile, the local administrations are tasked with completing the various paper work, adjusting the regional spatial plan (RTRW) and spatial detail plan (RDTR) and handling other relevant permits.
North Kalimantan Governor Irianto Lambrie welcomed the signing of the agreement, saying that the Inpres indicated the central government’s seriousness to spread development across the country.
“It is a breakthrough. We have to follow it up to accelerate development all over the country so that development is not just Java centered, but is Indonesia centered,” he added. (bbn)
